Recently we learned that Brisbane International Airport became the first airport in the world to accept cryptocurrency payments in all of their stores. Last week, further positive news emerged when the small coastal town of Agnes Water, just north of Brisbane in Queensland, took the lead to become the first cryptocurrency friendly town in Australia.

According to the ABC news report, local real estate agent Gordon Christian said the strategy was to attract more tourism to the area and appeal to an alternative type of traveller. There are now 31 businesses in the town now who accept cryptocurrency including resorts, tour operators, restaurants and a day spa. TravelbyBit‘s point of sale system helps retailers to accept payment by cryptocurrency.

This move by Agnes Water will be the first of many to come as cryptocurrency becomes more widely adopted by the general public in Australia and across the world.

In fact, in news further abroad, the largest shopping complex in Slovenia is set to become the worlds first “Bitcoin City” (according to Bit Money News). To help them achieve this goal, a Slovenian startup company called Eligma will install their Bitcoin payment software in all the retailers, which includes a main shopping mall, restaurants, night clubs, cinemas, hotel, market, mini golf course, waterpark, entertainment centre, casino, bowling alley and office buildings.

Looks like a great place for a holiday 🙂
